Grohote - Island of Solta

Grohote is the biggest and the oldest city on the island of Solta, as well as its natural and economic centre. It is situated on the north of the island, 3 kilometers from the port Rogac.
It is famous for its naive artists (Eugen Buktenica, Dinko Sule, and Marin Kalajzic).
There are numerous old ruins in Grohote, such as the remains of the old Christian basilica dating from the 6th/7th century which contains two Christian sarcophagi. In the centre of the village you can find a defensive tower from the 12th century, and a few fortified village houses also from that time. Not far from the village there is a Gothic church, Saint Michael (Sveti Mihovil), decorated with Gothic frescos.
In Grohote tourists can buy famous honey and propolis, and in the restaurants they can enjoy in the homemade specialties. Aside from the organization of cultural events (like performances and exhibitions), there is also a special touristic branch offered to those interested in hunting (the Hunting Association "Solta").
